This had not been the road trip she had planned.
Abby sat sullenly at the side of the road pouting as she looked at the smoking hood of her rented car, thinking quietly of everything that had gone wrong from the beginning.
At first, everything seemed to have gone as planned. She had packed the night before then set off as the sun was barely rising so she would miss heavy traffic.
That should have been the first clue that things were going to go downhill. She had found herself in gridlock for two hours. She hadn't known about the suddenly and supposedly important road work that had been planned for the route she had planned.
So she sat in the car, moving only inches at a time. She played music loud and smiled at other irritated drivers until she finally reached the end of the construction. Once free of traffic, she floored the car and began to speed down the interstate, looking for the exit that would take her out of the mainstream and into the back roads where she was sure she would enjoyed the scenery.
Apparently the police behind her, didn't appreciate her sudden newfound excitement and promptly pulled her over for speeding. She tried to smile and joke with the officer as he sullenly wrote her a ticket, but he wasn't in the mood for being happy. So she took the ticket and drove off, slower and more careful.
Then there was the pothole that forced her to stop and change a rear tire. She hadn't thought it was that deep or that jagged, but her tire said otherwise. It took her another thirty minutes with other cars flying past her at high rates of speed before she finally replaced the tire and was once again on her way.
After an hour, she thought she was in the clear. The roads were empty and she was sure that she was going to be able to make up time as she picked up speed, sure that there were not police officers anywhere in this secluded spot.
Then it happened. The engine light came on and was followed by a horrible clanging sound. She screamed over the music playing in disgust. Carefully she pulled over and hit the Onstar button, telling the polite and too perky operator her problem. The light and happy voice told her they had her location and would send help as soon as humanly possible....and then added that Abby should continue to have a nice day.
So here she sat, pouting that her well planned trip had been spoiled. She fumed as she picked up a blade of grass and began tying it into knots as she waited for the rescue crew to find her.
As she silently griped, a movement caught her eye. Slowly she turned her head and found herself staring at a doe with two small fawns close. A smile played over her lips as one of the small animals made it's way toward her carefully. She didn't move as the damp, tiny nose touched her her own nose.
Finally, the mother snorted, causing the baby to return to her side. Abby watched as the two fawns disappeared into the brush. The adult deer looked Abby in the eye and for a moment the woman thought the animal had nodded to her then ran to join her children.
Suddenly Abby thought this road trip wasn't so bad after all.
